The A Train

This piece is inspired by both the A Train’s fast trajectory between 59th Street and 125th Street and also by the well known signature piece of the Duke Ellington Orchestra, composed by Billy Strayhorn, “Take the ‘A’ Train” (1938). This song was was recorded and sung by Ella Fitzgerald many times with one of the most famous version from her 1961 Verve release, Ella in Hollywood, in which her signature scatting is featured in this song.

This is my preferred subway ride in New York City as the train flies through the underground space of darkness with flashes of light from the passing local train platforms.
